"As patent attorneys, we work at the cutting-edge of research, business and IP strategies"
Marcel Kortekaas is a partner and Dutch and European patent attorney at EP&C Patent Attorneys. He studied inorganic chemistry and polymer chemistry at the University of Groningen. His career began in 1987 as a trainee patent attorney at Shell, after which he became head of the intellectual property department at Kraton Polymers. Since 2007, Marcel has been part of EP&C.
Marcel combines his experience as an in-house attorney at multinationals with that of an independent patent attorney, bringing a sharp business acumen to the table. This enables him to fully understand his clients' needs and provide solutions that are both legally and practically optimal. He is a Certified Licensing Professional and obtained the European Patent Litigation Certificate in Strasbourg. His expertise is further demonstrated by his role as an expert in various legal cases in countries such as China and the Netherlands.
Marcel leverages his extensive knowledge of chemistry to support companies across a wide range of sectors, but his passion lies in green and sustainable innovations. Whether it involves innovative process technologies or sustainable energy solutions, he is dedicated to making a real difference. Driven by curiosity and perseverance, Marcel strives to provide the best possible assistance to each client. As he puts it, "It feels good when you can make a difference for your clients." Additionally, through his activities within the Standing Committee on Sustainability of the AIPPI, Marcel is active on an international level.
His dedication and determination are evident in a recent case where he identified a gap in patent law and is now fighting for his client before the highest judicial authority of the European Patent Office, the Enlarged Board of Appeal (G_1/24).
With his deep knowledge of chemistry and focus on sustainable technologies, Marcel Kortekaas is a valuable partner for companies looking to protect their innovations and successfully bring them to market.
