Jordi Kox

Introducing Jordi

I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Twente and earned a Master’s in IP Law and Management from the University of Strasbourg, focusing on the Unitary Patent and the Unified Patent Court (UPC). I have been a patent attorney since 2004 and joined EP&C in 2006.

My work involves handling patent applications, oppositions, and defending or challenging patents before the EPO’s Boards of Appeal. I also act as an independent expert in evidence seizures and advise clients on IP strategy. As a member of FICPI’s CET4 Working Group, I enjoy engaging in strategic debates and speak Dutch, English, Spanish, and German.

IAM Patent 1000
IAM magazine (and international magazine about IP) publishes an annual special
called “IAM Patent 1000 - World’s Leading Patent Practitioners”. This is what they say about Jordi:
2024
EP&C is a superb choice for all rights holders, from start-ups to multinational heavyweights, and companies can find everything they need to protect their intangible assets under one roof. “The firm is doing excellent work and its team is super friendly, approachable and excellent at explaining the complex patent landscape.” The outfit is a particular hit with patrons in the mechanical sector, with Jordi Kox and Christiaan Houben lauded as “extremely creative attorneys that come up with technically brilliant and winning arguments that other attorneys would not have even considered”. Civil engineer Walter Hart is a repository of trust for those in the construction industry, thanks to his impeccable patentability instincts and in-house experience. Meanwhile, managing partner Hendrik Jan Brookhuis is the go-to for Canadian and US entities looking to protect their rights and cement their market position in Europe.

2020
"Kox is a strong, analytical and thorough professional” who nets success before the EPO time and again."
2019
"Hart is also an expert on all things UPC-related, as is Jordi Kox who wrote a thesis on the subject while taking his MA in IP law and management. Kox is a talented linguist who speaks Dutch, English, Spanish and German – this, combined with his down-to-earth sensibility, makes him easy for just about any company to partner with on IP strategy implementation projects.”
2018
“Kox is my first option in the Netherlands,” says one foreign associate, enthusing over “an extremely talented patent specialist”, whose peers “would not hesitate to consult him”. “He’s technically proficient, a team player and is a great performer in the courtroom, where he stands out from the competition.” Experienced before the EPO, he knows the likely arguments for rejection or cancellation, and channels this knowledge into avoiding common pitfalls in prosecuting applications.
